Collection from the past and from the future 2014-2015

New Collection

This exhibition began when Yuken was invited to create a work based on the historical collection of Okinawan/Ryukyuan objects of the Ethnological Museum in Dahlem, Berlin. The installations combines objects of the 19th century museum collection, pacific war remnants and contemporary objects from Okinawa. The installation merges past, present and future narratives in a contemplation on the history, life and culture of Okinawa. The floating presentation is designed with the intention to stimulate the viewer and activate ideas. As a response to the historical objects from the Okinawa Collection of the the Museum, Yuken proposed to enhance the collection into the present, by gathering and adding objects and cloths beginning from the time the first collection stopped. Remnants from the pacific war and recent objects from Okinawa are displayed amongst visual ideas of the future, What should be considered specifically for an ethnological new collection to add? I started looking for items that reflect the current Okinawa people’s movement. The items represent local cultural activities including peace movements and activities to protect nature.


２０１４年に、ドイツの民族博物館・アジア美術館にて個展をさせてもらった。その際、博物館への新コレクションとして、沖縄の自然を守る運動、新米軍基地建設反対運動で作られた、Tシャツや、バッジ等、そして戦争壕から２０１４年に発掘された遺留品を提案した。今その手続きの最終段階だ。
僕が新コレクションにて、認識されてほしいと真から願っているのは、その品々の背後にある、戦後７０年間、耐え続けられている、平和、自然、そして民主政治においての基本的人権獲得への沖縄の運動。そしてその精神を支えている人達。壕へ、未だ供養されていない戦争の犠牲者のために足を運ぶ人達の存在だった。２０１６年、文化的遺産として、ベルリンの国立博物館に収められる。
